How can I tell if my dog is anxious?

Symptoms of anxiety and stress can show themselves in many forms, your dog can be restless, panting excessively, barking, howling. or showing signs of destructive behaviour. If your dog shows regular symptoms we would always recommend speaking to your vet.

What can cause my dog to become stressed or anxious?

Anxiety in dogs can be triggered by changes in their environment. Fear of the unknown, including things like new social situations (more people at your home, their first visit to a busy park etc) is a common trigger; as well as unfamiliar noise. During party season (usually from Halloween through to New Year's Eve) excess noise can overwhelm your dog’s senses.

Some dogs who are left home alone for longer periods of time can also develop separation anxiety; where they find it hard to relax when the rest of the family isn’t around. Read up on separation anxiety in dogs over on the blog to see how you can help your dog cope when you’re not around.

Which is the best dog anxiety treatment?

Which treatment you use will depend on your dog’s individual requirements. If your dog regularly wears a collar; a pheromone collar or calming bandana would be a good stress reliever.

For seasonal use, pheromone diffusers can be plugged in around the house to help calm your dog wherever they roam. For a more direct treatment, a calming spot on or tablet can be administered when stressful situations may arise.
