Finding the Right Food for Your Cat
Every cat is an individual with their own quirks, routines, and distinct tastes. Some will sprint into the kitchen the second they hear a pouch tear open, while others prefer to graze quietly at their bowl throughout the afternoon. Beyond personal preferences, your cat also relies on you to give them all the nutrients they need to stay bright, active, and healthy. Finding the perfect cat food can feel like a bit of a puzzle with so many recipes to choose from, but getting it right makes all the difference to their everyday wellbeing.
Here at Pets & Friends, we want feeding time to be simple, rewarding, and stress-free. Whether you share your home with an adventurous outdoor explorer, a tranquil indoor napper, an energetic kitten, or a gentle senior, our cat food collection has something tasty and wholesome to suit every bowl.
Understanding What Your Cat Needs to Thrive
Unlike humans and dogs, cats are obligate carnivores. This means their bodies are built to digest animal protein and fats rather than plants and carbohydrates. Meat is not just a tasty treat for a cat; it is a nutritional necessity. Real animal protein provides essential amino acids that cats cannot produce on their own.
One of the most vital of these nutrients is taurine. Taurine supports healthy heart muscle function, sharp vision, and a robust immune system. A diet rich in animal protein also supplies fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, which nourish your cat's skin and give their coat a glossy shine. You can also support overall health with targeted supplements and proactive cat healthcare.
When you browse our range, you will find recipes packed with recognisable, nourishing ingredients like fresh chicken, salmon, turkey, duck, and tuna. We stock foods made with high meat content and minimal fillers, ensuring your feline friend gets genuine goodness in every mouthful.
Wet Food Versus Dry Kibble
One of the most common questions pet parents ask is whether they should feed wet food, dry food, or a mix of both. Each option brings distinct advantages, and the best choice usually depends on your cat's health needs and daily habits.
The Benefits of Wet Cat Food
In the wild, cats absorb most of their daily hydration directly from the prey they catch. Because of this natural trait, many domestic cats have a very low thirst drive and rarely drink enough from their water bowls. Wet cat food contains high moisture levels, which helps keep your cat well hydrated throughout the day. This extra hydration is especially beneficial for kidney health and helps reduce the likelihood of urinary tract issues.
Wet food comes in cans, tins, and easy-to-serve pouches, offering a tempting variety of textures. Whether your cat prefers tender shreds in clear jelly, rich meaty paté, or juicy chunks smothered in gravy, wet food delivers intense aroma and flavour that even the most stubborn, fussy eaters find hard to resist.
The Benefits of Dry Cat Food
Dry cat food kibble is popular for its sheer convenience and practicality. It stays fresh in the bowl all day, making it an ideal choice if your cat prefers to graze on small meals while you are out at work.
Crunchy kibble also helps support oral hygiene. The gentle abrasive action of chewing biscuits can help scrape away soft plaque from your cat's teeth, especially when paired with dedicated cat dental treats. Dry food is easy to measure accurately for portion control, stores neatly in a sealed tub, and offers fantastic value for everyday feeding.
The Best of Both Worlds with Mixed Feeding
You do not have to choose just one format. Many owners find that mixed feeding works brilliantly. Serving a portion of wet food in the morning and evening delivers vital hydration and flavour, while leaving a measured scoop of dry kibble out during the day lets your cat snack when they feel peckish. Mixed feeding keeps mealtime exciting and helps your cat enjoy the health perks of both options. It is also easy to keep regular supplies running smoothly via our cat food subscription service.
Nutritional Support for Every Life Stage
A cat's nutritional requirements shift dramatically as they grow from a curious youngster into a mature companion. Feeding a life-stage-specific diet ensures your cat gets the right balance of energy and minerals at every age.
Kitten Food for Healthy Growth
Kittens grow rapidly and burn through huge amounts of energy while exploring their surroundings. Specially formulated kitten food recipes are packed with concentrated protein and healthy calories to fuel strong muscles and steady bone development. They also contain DHA, an essential omega 3 fatty acid found in mother's milk that supports brain development and clear eyesight. The pieces in dry kitten food are made smaller so tiny mouths can chew them comfortably, while tender wet kitten food provides gentle nourishment.
Adult Cat Food for Everyday Balance
Once your cat reaches their first birthday, their growth levels out and their nutritional needs stabilise. Adult cat food focuses on maintaining ideal body condition, sustained daily energy, and overall health. These balanced recipes support healthy digestion, lean muscle mass, and strong teeth. You can explore advice on feline diets, care routines, and behaviour over at the Cat Hub blog.
Senior Cat Food for Gentle Care
As cats enter their golden years, usually around age seven, their activity levels drop, and their metabolism slows. Senior cat food is tailored to support ageing bodies. These recipes often feature adjusted calorie levels to prevent unwanted weight gain, controlled phosphorus levels to protect kidney function, and added glucosamine and chondroitin to keep stiff joints supple and comfortable. Senior wet foods often feature softer textures that are gentle on older teeth and sensitive gums.
Tailored Food for Specific Health Needs
Every cat is unique, and sometimes an everyday recipe does not quite hit the mark. We stock a wide range of specialised formulas to support cats with specific lifestyle or health needs.
Grain-Free Food
Cats with sensitive digestion or food intolerances often do much better on grain-free recipes. Read more on whether a grain-free diet suits your feline. These meals swap out wheat, corn, and soya for easily digestible carbohydrates like sweet potato, peas, or lentils.
Sterilised and Neutered Diets
Neutering is great for your cat's health and behaviour, but it can slow down their metabolism and increase their appetite. Neutered cat food contains fewer calories and balanced fibre levels to help your cat feel full without packing on excess weight.
Indoor Cat Recipes
Indoor cats tend to spend less energy than outdoor wanderers and spend more time grooming. Indoor formulas feature moderate energy levels to prevent weight gain and extra dietary fibre to help hair pass smoothly through the digestive tract, reducing troublesome hairballs.
Sensitive Digestion and Hypoallergenic Food
If your cat suffers from loose stools, vomiting, or itchy skin, a hypoallergenic or single-protein recipe can help. Novel meats like duck or fish avoid common allergens that can trigger flare-ups.
Trusted Brands for Happy Cats
We take pride in stocking pet food brands that put real meat, high-quality sourcing, and sound animal nutrition first. In our collection, you will find top names such as Canagan, Carnilove, Orijen, Acana, and Applaws. These brands create biologically appropriate recipes packed with free-run poultry, wild-caught fish, and carefully chosen botanical herbs.
Alongside these high-meat brands, we carry reliable, everyday favourites like Felix, Whiskas, and Burgess. Whatever your budget and whatever your pet's tastes, you can shop with confidence knowing every product provides safe, complete nutrition, and you can always save with our cat multi-buy deals and cat special offers.
How to Introduce a New Cat Food
When you find a new food you want to try, introduce it gradually rather than switching overnight. Sudden changes in diet can upset your cat's delicate stomach and cause loose stools or a refusal to eat.
Aim to transition over seven to ten days. Start by mixing about 25% of the new food with 75% of their old food for the first few days. Gradually increase the proportion of the new food every two or three days while reducing the old food, until the bowl contains 100% new food. Reward them during the switch with delicious cat treats to keep feeding time positive.
Always remember to keep fresh, clean drinking water available around your home. Many cats prefer drinking away from their food bowl, and pet water fountains are a great way to encourage them to drink more. For personal advice, feel free to visit our staff at your nearest local Pets & Friends store.
